Nearly eight months. It's been a while. My photography has taken a back seat to life. But I hope that's about to change. There are two new images in the Landscape Gallery. Well, to be honest, one is new and the other is an old one I've reworked and am finally happy with the result. Take a look.

In the mean time, I suggest reading an interesting article from Cole Thompson's blog, titled Do You Manipulate Your Images?. His perspective on the subject aligns quite well with mine, and he is far more eloquent than I (don't forget to check out the stunning and thought provoking images in his gallery). Do I manipulate my images?  You bet I do!

I'm still working my way through the autumn images I took last month. The lastest image added to the site is Park Road

This is actually two images merged together as a High Dynamic Range, or HDR, image. The dynamic range in this is more than the camera can capture in a single picture - especially the contrast between the shadows and the bright sun. Combining the two images with Photomatix Pro, followed by several hours of work in Photoshop, has really brought out the wonderful colors and brilliant light from this beautiful and crisp autumn day.

A very nice write up on HDR photography can be found on the Mountain High Landscape Photography Workshops website:

Wow the autumn season is slipping by quickly! I've had little time to get out and get some shots, and the leaves are nearly all off the trees already! I did get out twice in the last week though, for which I'm grateful. The first two have been uploaded to the landscape gallery (with more to follow): Autumn Color and Portage Bridge

Both of these were taken in Letchworth State Park, in New York. There is a very interesting history behind the Portage Bridge, which you can learn about on the Letchworth Park History web site. Be sure to click on the links for the images of the original wooden bridge - I highly recommend the read - good stuff!

I don't do a very good job of keeping this page up to date, do I? Since our July rains, we've had nearly drought conditions - go figure. Speaking of drought conditions - that might apply to my picture taking as well! But since the beginning of September, I've had some opportunities, and hope to get out and do more during the autumn months.

In the mean time, I've added a new gallery, Finger Lakes Wine Country, to showcase my new portfolio, which I've only just begun to work on. This is a project for the coming months (maybe years?), and is the beginning of a new direction for my work. Or perhaps more accurately, a refinement and re-focus of my portfolio. If you've visited before, you'll notice that some galleries have been removed. My intent is to more tightly focus on landscapes, nature and fine art photography. As part of that endeavor, I will be completely redesigning the web site over the winter months (time permitting). More on all of this later.

Many thanks for visiting! John

I need to retire :-) I have enjoyed two weeks, plus another few days, of vacation in the Adirondacks last month. It rained most of the time, but when it wasn't raining, the sky and light was unusually compelling. I did manage to capture some very nice shots. Please browse the nature and landscape galleries to see my most recent images. I'm having a difficult time choosing a favorite, but I think it's a toss-up between Storm Over Lake Placid from Whiteface Mountain and Boathouse.

I'll let you decide.

It's been quite some time since I've updated the site. Trying to find the time to get out and take some pictures is proving to be a challenge.

The good news is that I've added a new gallery: Botanicals. These images are the result of my experimenting with a soft light box in the studio. So far I'm enjoying this, so you can expect more pictures to come.

Thanks for visiting!

Happy New Year! Is it really almost 2009 already?
I was thinking of upgrading my camera this year. But the new year truly seems to be wrought with peril - financially at least. So any upgrade plans are on hold until I feel like there is some kind of job security in my future (maybe that will never be more than a wish :-( ).
Anyway, the holidays are nearly done, and it's time to continue building up the web site. Today we got a moderately heavy snow fall; usually not a welcome thing when I have to fight my way through traffic to get to work - but having the day off, it became a winter wonderland. Not having touched my camera since last September's trip to Old Forge, the batteries were nearly dead. But I did get off a couple of shots which didn't turn out half bad - check them out...

More images! And a new gallery! As I've started to sort through my pictures, I've found a few that defy categorization - so I've added the Miscellanea gallery for those - something of a junk drawer, I guess - lol.
I've renamed the Black & White gallery as Monochrome so I can include some other pictures which are not strictly black and white. There is also a new place holder for a future gallery dedicated to HDR (high dynamic range) images.
With the holidays close at hand, I will be spending less time on the web site upgrades, but I will try to do a little here and there.

Happy Holidays!

A few more images have been added to the galleries. I guess this is going to take some time.
Most of the effort over the past week has been put into several enhancements which should improve the performance and appearance of the website. The site has been tested on Internet Explorer 6 and 7, Firefox and Safari version 3.2.
Speaking of Safari - it likes to cache the website, so new additions to existing pages may not show up. If you think you're not seeing the latest page, right-click and select Reload. If there is something new, it should show up.
Still under construction... lol

Today is the unofficial launch of the site. A real milestone, despite there being only three(!) pictures at this point. All the major functional pieces are in place, but there are still some rough edges to work out, and content to add. Please visit again soon - things should be changing frequently over the next few weeks :-)
